Sports Predictions With Friends: How to Run a Free Prediction League
Updated October 18, 2026
A Champions League night, a World Cup group game or the Super Bowl: every match is better when everyone has called it before kick-off. Here’s how to run a free prediction league with your friends, with no money involved, and keep it going all season.
How it works: one bet per match, a ranking at the end
A prediction league with friends is simple. Before each match, everyone makes a prediction. After the final whistle, you see who got it right. A few weeks in, a ranking takes shape, the group chat fills up with banter, and whoever is in last place knows a dare is coming.
With MyMiniBet, each question is its own small bet with its own link. There’s no account to create, no app to install and no money to put down: you play for bragging rights and, if the group wants, a harmless dare. Wondering why it’s more fun without stakes? Our guide to betting without money explains it, and covers the legal side too.
It works for football (or soccer, depending on where you live) and for almost any other sport, as you’ll see below.
Set up a match bet in 20 seconds
Start from the who-will-win template, or create a bet from scratch:
- The question. Up to 140 characters. Be specific: "England v Brazil, Saturday 8 pm: who wins?"
- The answer type. For the winner, pick Choice and type three answers: "England", "Draw", "Brazil".
- The stake. A dare from the suggested ideas, one you write yourself (up to 100 characters), or no dare at all, just bragging rights.
- The deadline. Set the end of predictions to kick-off time. At 8 pm sharp, nobody can bet anymore.
- Sharing. WhatsApp, Snapchat, text message, copy link or QR code. The link shows a preview with the question, so your friends know what it’s about before they even tap.
Everyone opens the link, types their first name or a nickname and makes a prediction. They can change it until the deadline, which is handy when the team news drops an hour before the game. Until then, everyone can see who has played, but not their answers, so nobody can copy. Once predictions close, they’re all revealed at once, and you watch the match with a whole new level of interest.
The add-to-calendar button puts the deadline in your calendar, so you don’t forget to play before kick-off.
Draw, or who goes through?
In a league game or a group stage, the draw is a real answer. In a knockout match, word the question so there’s no argument later: "Winner after 90 minutes" (with the draw) or "Who goes through?" (no draw, extra time and penalties included). A clear question means a verdict nobody can dispute.
Number questions: closest wins
Picking the winner is the basics. To spice up your league, add questions where you guess a number. With the Number type, whoever is closest wins, and you can add an optional unit (goals, minutes, points...). The total goals template is ready to go.
A few ideas:
- Total goals: "How many goals in England v Brazil?"
- Winning margin: "What’s the goal difference at full time?" (0 for a draw).
- First goal: "In which minute is the first goal scored?" with the unit "minutes" (add "90 if no goal").
- Corners or yellow cards, for the real experts.
With a Number bet, the dare goes to whoever is furthest off, not to everyone who missed. That often feels fairer in a big group.
Exact score? The simplest way is a Choice bet with up to six likely scores, such as "1-0", "2-1", "1-1", "0-1", "1-2" and "Any other score".
After the match: the organizer enters the result
When you create a bet, you get a secret organizer link. Keep it safe: the easiest way is to send it to yourself on WhatsApp. It lets you close predictions early if needed (if a game is brought forward, say), enter the result or delete the bet. The organizer can make a prediction too, like everyone else.
After the final whistle, the organizer enters the real result. The site names the winners: the right answer for a Choice bet, the closest guess for a Number bet. Confetti on screen, then a story-format verdict card to post on Snapchat, Instagram or as a WhatsApp status. A reminder button prepares a ready-made message for the loser who has suddenly gone very quiet about their dare.
The result is never automatic: someone has to enter it. So pick an organizer who actually watches the games, or at least checks the score that evening.
The friends' league: follow a whole season
One match is fun. A whole season is a proper championship. From any bet, tap Launch another bet with the same group: the new bet joins the same league, and the league shows a ranking with 1 point per bet won.
How to run it:
- One bet per match, or per question. On a big European night, run a bet for each game your group cares about.
- Post every new link in the same group chat. The site doesn’t send notifications, so your message is the reminder.
- Always use the same name. Points are counted by first name: if Jake plays as "Jakey" one week and "Jake" the next, his points end up on two separate lines.
- Find everything in My bets, the list of bets you created or joined on your phone.
Formats that work well:
- A league season, Premier League, MLS or any league you follow, with one bet per weekend on the biggest game.
- A World Cup, with one bet per match for your team, plus a "Who will be champion?" bet before the opening game: five favorites as a Choice, and "Another team" as the sixth answer.
- The Champions League, from the first matchday to the final.
Rugby, tennis, cycling, Formula 1 and more
The idea works for almost any sport. You just need the right answer type.
Rugby
- "Ireland v France: who wins?" as a Choice, with the draw (rare, but it happens).
- "What’s the winning margin?" as a Number, with the unit "points".
- "How many tries in the match?" as a Number.
The Six Nations gives you five weekends: plenty for a proper ranking.
Tennis
- "Who wins the Wimbledon final?" as a Choice with the two finalists.
- "How many sets will the final last?" as a Number.
- For a whole tournament: "Who lifts the trophy?" with five favorites and "Someone else".
Cycling
- "Who wins the Tour de France?" as a Choice with five contenders and "Another rider".
- "Will the yellow jersey change hands today?" as a Yes / No, one small bet per stage.
Formula 1
- "Who wins the Monaco Grand Prix?" as a Choice, with the drivers you like and "Another driver".
- "How many cars finish the race?" as a Number.
- "Will there be a safety car?" as a Yes / No.
Set the deadline for the start of the race, or the start of qualifying if you’re also betting on pole position.
American sports
- "Who wins the Super Bowl?" as a Choice.
- "Total points scored?" as a Number, closest wins.
- In the NBA Finals: "How many games will the series go?" as a Number.
Keep it fun: dares and a homemade trophy
What keeps a prediction league alive isn’t the stake, it’s the laughs. The site never offers prizes and there’s never any money involved: the reward is being right in front of everyone. The rest is up to your group.
For the loser of each match, a light dare is enough:
- use the rival team’s shirt as your profile picture for 24 hours;
- commentate the next goal in a voice note, TV-style;
- send a voice note humming the winning team’s anthem;
- make the playlist for the next match night.
Our list of funny, harmless dares has plenty more.
At the end of the season, the leader wins... a title. Rename the group chat "Sarah, Queen of Predictions" for a week, make a homemade trophy out of a paper towel roll and gold paper, or let them pick the next game you all watch together. Whoever finishes last gets an end-of-season dare chosen by the group: always harmless, never humiliating.
Hosting friends for a final? Our guide to party bets has bonus questions for the night. And if not everyone loves sport, mix things up with our fun bet ideas for friends: a league takes any kind of bet, not just sport.
What about the office?
Big tournaments are the perfect excuse for a game with colleagues. Same idea, plus a couple of common-sense rules: joining is optional and dares stay work-appropriate. It’s all in our guide to office pool ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Is the prediction league really free?
Yes. Creating a bet, making predictions and following the league ranking cost nothing, and there’s never any money involved: you play for bragging rights or a dare the group chooses.
Do my friends need an app or an account?
No. They open the link you sent on WhatsApp, Snapchat or by text, type their first name and make a prediction. Only the organizer needs to keep the secret organizer link.
Can someone bet or change their prediction after kick-off?
No. At the deadline, the bet closes on its own and all predictions are revealed. The organizer can also close it earlier.
How does the season ranking work?
From any bet, launch another bet with the same group: together they form a league, with 1 point per bet won, counted by first name. More answers in our FAQ.
